In the 4th and final end of season match, the U13's were chasing an undefeated run against a visiting Edenbridge team.
Maybe due to the weather, Brighton conceded the first try, a breakaway from deep in Brighton's half, to give them something to chase. This stirred a reaction and Brighton equalised quickly and were unlucky not to score again in the corner when a deceptive trick-pass from Ollie nearly put Isaac in.
The second quarter saw several exchanges in possession without score and strong defensive skills from both sides.
In reply to another try from Edenbridge, the Blues retrieved their own 5th tackle kick ahead, passing the ball wide to Ben for a trademark show and go try, leaving the match level 2-2 at half time.
For the second half Edenbridge requested a rule variation to kick for territory at any time, not just tackle 5. The referee accepted of course and while explaining the change to Brighton, slipped into coach mode and reminded the Blues that kicking away possession was high risk and not part of our game plan - a valuable call as the game played out.
As the pace of the game took effect, some gaps started opening up in both defenses but Blues held strong and put the ball through the hands for Fin to run in a deserved score.
With some dynamic rolling subs to keep everyone's legs fresh, a couple of 5th tackle kicks through from Ollie nearly bounced for the Blues, finally being rewarded as the space opened up for another try for the Blues - finishing the quarter 4-2.
In the final quarter, with the forwards having done the work running the ball up the middle, the game plan moved to running the backs lines. As Edenbridge continued trying to break the line with early phase kicks, Theo read the play perfectly and charged down a kick. This inspired the team and in defense resisted any further scores. Whilst in attack, Cameron was unlucky not to capitalize on a clear break and as the clock reached the final play of the game the backs put the ball through the hands for Jonah to score and complete the match 5-2.
Thanks go to our visitors Edenbridge, our ref, coaches and organisers, the team contribution by all players and our supporters. As Arkwright said, "it's been a funny old year" and it's been great to get back to playing some matches. The foundations laid by Monsieur Pierre Le Petit have put us in good stead for the new season ahead.
