Sussex Cup Quarter Final

Brighton and Horsham supporters were treated to a try fest at the Hall of Dreams on Sunday with 2 teams slugging it out with the promise of a semi-final place at the end. Horsham turned up with a full squad and some big forwards which looked to make the game an uneven contest. This proved to be far from the case with the Brighton pack standing up to all the challenges.
Brighton started fast and was camped in the Horsham half for most of the 1st 20 minutes and with a penalty kick and then a try by Lorenzo Buggin went 8-0 up only to be pegged back just before the end of the first half with a Horsham try to make it 8-7 at the break.
Horsham came out fast and put pressure on Brighton scoring quickly at the start of the second half to make it 8-12. Brighton responded and from then on it was end-to-end with tit-for-tat scoring by both sides. Whilst Brighton were playing a more expansive game Horsham’s power put them under pressure throughout. Some individual brilliance by Will Varley backed up superb support play and kept Brighton in the Hunt.
So, it was all down to the last quarter with 2 teams locked in battle, and with Horsham getting a penalty try and Brighton a yellow card things were starting to look a little bit daunting for Brighton but down to superb work rate and heart Brighton continued to compete.
It always looked like the last score would be decisive and this proved to be true.
With 5 minutes to go Horsham after sustained pressure forced their way over for a score and with the conversion led by 6 points in the dying minutes. This looked like the end but not for these Brighton Colts who have come so far this season. They battled back up the pitch matching skill with ferocity to score one more time through Radley Larder under the posts with time up. The conversion by Theo Johnson was the last action of a tense game with Brighton winning 34-33. Theo admitted he didn’t know how important his conversion was until swamped by his teammates.
The Supporters were treated to a great game of rugby by 2 good teams who left it all out on the pitch.
Well done our boys and our thanks to Horsham for such a good game.
The Colts are on to Eastbourne next week for the League decider and also to await our Cup Semi-final Draw.
