Sunday saw an exciting climax to the regular season with Brighton Blues U16 pushed to the wire by a strong Heathfield and Waldron side.
The two sides had early met in mid December in the league which had produced an equally entertaining and scintillating display of what some of the best players in the County are capable of.
Over the past two seasons, the two sides have yielded over two thirds of the Sussex's representative players at this age-group and as such, both sides are aware of the others strengths and styles of play.
The Cup Final, saw Heathfield take an early lead, scoring twice within the first 12 minutes making the score 0-12 as the Brighton side seemed to take time to get into their stride. Despite this, the experienced Brighton players never panicked and began to play to their strengths, playing direct rugby that opened up spaces out-wide which our backs began to expose. An altogether more composed Brighton side capitalised on territory and posession and went into the half-time break trailing 10-12 following scores from Lewis Morton and Peter Sowerby.
Heathfield and Waldron weren't content with letting Brighton take back control of the fixture and scored almost immediately following the half-time break, their third try, like their earlier two, the product of some great precision in attack by their back line. Again, Brighton re-established control and as has been the case so often this season, as the match continued, the time and effort put into fitness and conditioning paid off. Asher Burrell, finished off two exceptionally well-worked tries to cap off what was probably the performance of his playing career to date. Despite a few late opportunities for both sides, the score remained at 20-17 and Brighton Blues U16 would be awarded both the League 1 and Cup Trophies.
This performance and win, meant that during the past 10 seasons as a side, this age-group has never fielded an 'A' side in Sussex and lost. This is just another in a long line of testaments that confirm the exceptional support these players have had from parents and coaches throughout the years.
COME ON YOU BRIGHTON BLUES!!
