After months of lockdown and Covid restrictions the U13 squad travelled to Lewes for their first competitive match of the season.
A week prior Lewes informed the team they would be playing the O2 rules as opposed to the RFU Return2Rugby Rules. After just 1 x Sunday Training session, Brighton U13 arrived at Lewes on a lovely sunny morning with 17 strong squad. The match allowed 10 players on at any one time with rolling subs, therefore everyone was involved.
The match was split in to 4 x15 minute quarters; in the 1st quarter the boys took time to adjust to the rules and slipped to a 2-0 deficit but showed signs of getting to grips with the rules. In the 2nd quarter, motivated by a team talk it was a much closer game and Brighton won the quarter 2-1 making the score 3-2 to Lewes. In the 3rd quarter the team turned it on with a couple of breakaway tries, some great defensive sets on their own try line holding Lewes out, denying them a score in this session and at the whistle Brighton were now leading 3-5. In the 4th quarter with the game poised, Brighton again put in a massive defensive effort to deny Lewes any further tries but also managed to score a further 2 tries, winning the match.
Final Result: Lewes 3 - Brighton 7
Great effort by all the squad and great to get a win under the team belt.
Next week Shoreham; let's hope the U13 can build on a fantastic start.
