The Blues got off to a good start when Rob Fogerty crashed over in the 11th minute. Lewis Evans added the extras to put the home side ahead 7-0. Maidstone got on the score sheet through the blues ill-discipline and kicked a penalty, 7-3. Evans stepped up again minutes later to slot a penalty and neutralise the previous kick from the visitors 10-3.
Brighton went into the break ahead and knew there was work to do to close the game out. This was not helped when Jack Emmerson was sent to the sin bin reducing Brighton to 14 men. Brighton put in a huge defensive effort spending sustained periods under pressure from Maidstone. Blues were able to hold on to the ball long enough to mount and attack and gain territory into the Maidstone 22. Blues were awarded a penalty and Ben Herbe reacted quickest to snipe over from close range 15-3. Maidstone did come at The Blues and crashed through under the posts to make the score 15-10 with the conversion. The Blues went back into the Maidstone half from kick off. Great hands from Rob Fogerty and Simon Lilley allowed Jack Emmerson to pirouette on his tip toes and touch down in the corner. This put The Blues ahead 20-15. Maidstone got another try in the 74th minute to make it a 5 point ball game at 20-15. Brighton’s mind set changed from going for the bonus point to closing out the game and controlling possession. The Blues did this successfully to get the 4 points and take an 8 point lead into the final 2 games over relegation rivals Chiswick. Brighton have shown remarkable form over the past few months to put themselves in control of their destiny with a trip to Sevenoaks and a visit from Tottonians left to come.
